FIRST IMPRESSIONS-ARE THEY REALLY LASTING?
"I never dreamed the impression I made on the interviewer would have such an impact on my getting a job." It's true. Personal appearance influences hiring decisions. A negative first impression is almost impossible to overcome (in spite of good qualifications), since 90% of employers decide within the first 10 minutes whether or not to hire you.
Looking the Part
From head to toe consider the following when dressing for the interview and work: Hair-
Keep your hair clean and combed. Keep it off your face. It is distracting to do business with an employee whose facial features, especially the eyes, are partially hidden from view. Choose a style and color that are appropriate for your job. Employees dealing with the public will need to address the issue in a more conservative manner.
Tattoos-
They may be stylish but employees dealing with the general public may be required to cover them.
Body piercing-
Like tattoos, the more conventional your job the more likely that conservative dress standards and codes will be followed. The two factors that dictate whether an employee is allowed to have pierced ears, eyelids, nose, or lips are: safety and appeal to cliental. Wearing earrings may need to wait till after hours.
Dress-
Going for an interview? If you are going to be working with the public then you will need to wear a dress, suit, or dress slacks/blouse. Too short an outfit, halter tops, or clothes not well kept (dirty/shrayed/wrinkled) send a loud and clear message about you. Think and choose wisely. Young men will want to wear a dress suit/coat, tie, shirt, and dress pants to an interview. Casual dress is appropriate only when your job is manual labor.
Make-up/Jewelry-
Too much make-up gives the impression that you are ready for a date. Too much jewelry is a distracton. Perfume is stifling! Create a positive impression. Strive for simplicity through elegance. No more than one ring on each hand.
Shoes-
Polished shoes go a long way to show that you pay attention to detail. The more public your job the more likely the interviewer is giving your shoes the once over. If girls will be on their feet most of the day be smart and wear flats or low heeled shoes.
Unsure about what to wear to work once you've been hired? Spend time prior to your first day on the job checking out the work place. Observe what the employees are wearing. Having secured the job ask the employer about the dress code. Better safe than sorry.
