Application Forms
Many places of employment have candidates fill out a standard application. Having gathered the same information from all candidates the employer can better compare the applicants.
Attach your resume to the application. Note on the form that your work experience and skills are listed on the resume. Make sure your resume demonstrates the skills necessary for the position for which you applying. If you are obviously lacking the qualifications, reevaluate whether you should be applying. If you do have the necessary qualifications, redo your resume to show them off. Remember that each resume should be hand tailored for the specific job sought.
Workers are often encouraged to recommend others for employment. Employers, rightly or not, assume that the qualities typical of employees who recommend friends and relatives for employment will likewise be evidenced among these potential employees. Choose your friends with great care! Consider whether these people are a help or hindrance to your job search/career advancement.
1. Print-don't write unless the application calls for it.
2. Use a blue or black ink pen. Pencil allows for altering of information and is not as
professional. Xerox several copies to practice filling out. When you're satisfied with your
answers fill out the application in pen.
3. Answer every question. Insert N/A (not applicable) if the question does not apply to you. The processing of your application depends on whether you've completed the entire application.
4. Write "open" where it asks for an expected salary. Stating a salary that is too high may eliminate you from contention for the job; giving a salary that is too low negates your worth and may give the appearance of being desperate. If the question of salary is raised during the interview, answer by saying that you would like them to assess your qualifications in light of the responsibilities and duties and come to an agreement.
5. Make sure all information is accurate. Proofread it!
6. Leaving a job raises serious questions for the employer. State the reason in a positive manner. Do not bad mouth the previous employer.
7. Before listing a person as your reference ask them.
8. Sign and date the application once you have read the final agreement.
